What is PRP?
It can be very emotional and a confidence killer for men and women when they start to lose their hair for various reasons. According to studies, approximately 56 million Americans are affected, and up to 40% are women. But luckily, there is a new hope for those suffering from hair loss. Platelet Rich Plasma, also known as PRP, is trending to be the new promising solution for both men and women of all ethnic types who suffer from hair thinning and hair loss. This non-surgical and non-invasive treatment harnesses the power of one’s own blood to prevent further hair loss and to stimulate the regrowth of natural, thick and healthy hair!
How PRP Works
Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) is a highly concentrated solution of platelets derived from the patient’s own blood, which makes the treatment safe and compatible for everyone. The key component in the blood is the plasma, as it contains white blood cells and platelets, which are highly rich in growth factors. Growth factors, in a sense, play the role of messengers, signaling the body to initiate a healing response and skin cells to function. Once these growth factors are introduced to the hair follicles of the scalp, they will stimulate the dormant cells of the hair follicles and revert them back to their growth phase.
For decades, the regenerative properties of PRP has been harnessed in medical field for a range of medical conditions including arthritis, tendonitis, joint injuries, signs of aging and more. Top athletes have long used PRP to accelerate healing from sports injuries and celebrities in the public eye have made it an essential component of their cosmetic enhancement. But over the past few years, PRP has exponentially grown in popularity all across the globe for its role in hair restoration. While the use of PRP for hair restoration is not yet an FDA-approved treatment there is a growing body of evidence including a number studies published in peer-reviewed journals that show its efficacy in stimulating the growth phase of the hair cycle not only leading to increased hair count but also to thickness of the individual hair strands.
One of the reasons why many patients decide to use PRP is because of how convenient and non-medically invasive the procedure is. It begins with a standard blood draw from the patient’s arm. The tube of blood is then put into a machine called a centrifuge, which spins the tube at very high speed thus leading to the separation of PRP from the components of blood. Once the centrifuge process is complete, the PRP solution is drawn up into syringes which Dr. Navi will use to inject directly into the scalp at the level of the hair follicles. Patient’s comfort during the process is of utmost importance. We use a cooling device to cool the skin during the injection process thus minimizing the associated discomfort. While the process of PRP isolation and administration is meticulous we have optimized it so that it is conveniently performed during a standard office visit in its entirety.
For optimal results, consistency is key. Treatments are performed once a month for four months, then every three to six months thereafter, depending on the individual patient’s baseline stage of hair loss and subsequent response to treatments. Following this protocol ensures that the hair follicles remain stimulated and that the hair regrowth is progressing in a systemic way. Early on in the treatment process a decrease in shedding is noted by patients. Subsequently many report thickening of pre-existing hair. Finally after about 2 to 3 months following the last monthly injection many patient experience 20 to 30% increase in hair density. While there is no one-agreed upon protocol by experts the current consensus is that receiving treatments every three to six months on a long-term basis is optimal for maintaining hair regrowth through continual to stimulation of the hair follicles.
